Filing a claim, step by step.

From the first phone call to a final settlement, here's what the process typically looks like — and where most people lose time or money.

Seven stages of a typical claim

1

Report the incident

Contact your insurer as soon as reasonably possible. Most policies require timely notice, and delays can complicate the claim.

2

Document the damage

Photos, videos, and written notes taken close to the event carry more weight than a description written later from memory.

3

Submit the claim

File formally through your insurer's portal, app, or agent, attaching your documentation and policy number.

4

Adjuster review

An adjuster is assigned, reviews your file, and may schedule a physical or virtual inspection to assess the loss.

5

Coverage decision

The insurer determines whether the loss is covered under your policy terms and communicates the decision in writing.

6

Settlement

The insurer proposes a payment amount. You can typically ask questions, provide additional evidence, or negotiate before accepting.

7

Appeal / follow-up

If a claim is denied or underpaid, most insurers allow a formal appeal with additional documentation or a second opinion.

Evaluating an offer

Compare against your own estimate

If your contractor's estimate is significantly higher than the offer, that gap is worth raising directly with the adjuster.

Ask for the offer in writing

A written breakdown makes it easier to see exactly what is and isn't included in the settlement.

You can negotiate

An initial offer isn't always final. Additional documentation can support a higher settlement in many cases.

Common mistakes

What tends to slow claims down

Waiting too long to report

Late reporting can raise questions about the cause or extent of damage.

Cleaning up before documenting

Repairing or discarding damaged items before photos are taken removes key evidence.

Giving vague verbal descriptions

Specific, written details hold up far better than general recollections during review.

Accepting the first offer too quickly

Initial offers aren't always the insurer's final position — review before signing anything.
